Do you know this man? Any ideas at all?

Good. You’re not supposed to, if he has his way. In case you’re in a curious mood, however, his name is Richard Hayne and he is the President and Founder of hipster and 20-something fashion mecca, Urban Outfitters.

What? How? But he’s… nothing like you expected, is he? Hm!

Alright, since we’re playing “introductions”, let’s try another one! Do you know this man?:

He’s a lovely, dapper looking fellow, now isn’t he? His name is Senator Rick Santorum. He’s a squishy, right-wing conservative from Pennsylvania. He enjoys spending his time with his wife and seven kids… Playing badminton, roasting turkeys and doing all he can to ensure that gay rights are a thing of the past.

Wait, wait, wait – back up?

Yes, Rick Santorum – while still serving on the Senate (1995 – 2007) – was not only hailed as a reliable ally of GWB, but is also infamous for his ability to compare ideas. Yes! He’s quite good. Here’s a quote where he makes one of his “best” comparisons, which fell on the ears of the AP:

“If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual [gay] sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything,” – Metro Weekly, Washington DC’s LGBT Newsagazine

Um, excuse me? Homosexuality equates to incest, polygamy, and adultery? Wow, son. That’s a bit rough. Oh wait, your remarks were “misleading” when printed? Do clarify.

“My discussion with the Associated Press was about the Supreme Court privacy case, the constitutional right to privacy in general, and in context of the impact on the family,” the statement read. “I am a firm believer that all are equal under the Constitution. My comments should not be misconstrued in any way as a statement on individual lifestyles.” – Metro Weekly

Ohhhhhh… Well, in that case… B.S., Santorum. Lest we not forget how you didn’t just compare, but equated the Catholic boy-fondling preists to a “basic homosexual relationship” [AP via USA Today]. It wasn’t child molestation because the preists weren’t having sex with boys, they “were having sexual relations with post-pubescent men”. Ah, we see the difference. No, really.

Santorum is also a comedian! Did you ever hear the one about… Oh, heck. Here it is:

“If we allow gay marriage, the next thing you know people will be marrying goldfish…”

ANYWAY. What do these two guys have in common? What does the Founder and President of a seemingly gay-friendly, youth-centric fashion retail store have to do with a homophobic, small minded, ex-Senator?

Richard Haynes, President/Founder of Urban Outfitters, owner of Anthropologie and Free People contributed over $13,000 to Santorum’s campaign and Political Action Committee over the years. (Pink News, Philadelphia Weekly)

Perhaps this explains the mysterious disappearance of pro-same-sex-marriage t-shirts off the Los Angeles Urban Outfitters shelves? Hmmm…

Imagine a scene, if you will…

You run into your local Urban Outfitters, Free People or Anthropologie and scope out the newest arrivals. Oh! That jacket you’ve been longing for sits on the wall, its perfect fabric drifting slightly as a result of the A/C unit above. You walk towards it, take it down from its rack, and hold it close look at the size. It’s the last one in the store, and sold out online… This is your one chance. You lift the tag – perfect, you whisper. You try it on, it fits like a glove. You rush to the cash register and throw your change down on the counter, much to the dismay of the 19 year old kid behind the counter, purple-haired and full of facial piercings. You don’t care – the jacket is yours. You run home to covet the jacket while the cashier delicately places the money in the register while muttering incoherantly about what a total bitch you are.

He ends up taking a fraction of your jacket’s sale price in his paycheck. Another fraction goes to the store’s rent. Another to the manager (that bitch is so overpaid…). Another to the garment makers in whatever random foreign countries the jacket is made in (don’t even get me started…). The rest trickles up to our dear friend Richard Hayne. Where does it go after that? Ricky decides, my friends, and we all know he has a penchant for gay-hating senators…

Let me tell you something: It takes balls to vote with your dollar. Trust me, I’m a budget fashion blogger. Don’t laugh! I take deals where I can get them, and guess what – Urban Outfitters has killer sales. Not to mention some really, really great clothes. Hello! Silence & Noise? Kimchi Blue? Miss Sixty? I’d live in this stuff, if I could. But I don’t. Why?

Because I don’t want my dollars and cents (what few I have) to end up in the hands of anti-evolving, ignorant, bigot bastards like Rick Santorum.

Sure, he might not be in office anymore, but give any web-savvy activist 15 seconds and they’ll hand you a printed list of the new Rick Santorums who are in office and can affect our ability to change.

You can get your Jeffrey Campbell shoes elsewhere, ladies. You can find a sweet leather jacket in an independent boutique. You will survive without the aid of Free People’s sundresses.

Be smart, save the fashion community and help give relevance to it by caring about social issues like this one.

Boycott Free People, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters.

Know where your money is going.

**A note from Jennifer: Now that you know the truth, click here to find some alternatives to Urban Outfitters. If you’re still tempted to shop the (admittedly gorgeous) designs that Urban Outfitters and its companies create, this post about Free People’s thievery and this one about Urban Outfitters’ long-standing pattern of stealing artists’ work should give you some more incentive not to.

Lindsay has a pretty strong opinion about Urban Outfitters, but guess who else has been linked to anti-gay political funding?  Target.  Read about their support of anti-gay legislation here.

Are you fucking serious? Fashion is fashion, art is still art no matter how stupid the political beliefs of the company’s president is. Sure, people are corrupt, but targetting one person in a world full of them won’t produce your desired effects. Think about it: this man has the largest hand in Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free People. The man will not be hurt by the boycotts, his company’s employees will. Yes, that very “19 year old kid behind the counter, purple-haired and full of facial piercings” the writer mentions earlier. I’m all for making a change in the world and doing what’s right, but boycotting brands over a man that will still make money either way, is not the smartest way of looking at it. In order to bring down an empire, you’re willing to make these innocent workers suffer. And have people dressing badly, haha.

While I agree with most of this ‘article’, I have to admit I find it more than just a bit hipocritical for you to be slamming a senator for making comparisons and drawing parallels between things that aren’t necessarily related, when you yourself are making the same leaps in this article. Simply because he funds the campaign of a conservative senator who happens to also be on record against gays does not make him anti-gay, it just makes him not pro-gay. For all you know he could be funding him because his rival for the senate seat would support legislation to increase the burden on medium retail chains, or he is very strongly pro-guns. Assuming that because part of the senator’s agenda is to back failed republican policies and opinions, and that therefore anyone who gives a dime to the man must hate gays is just a dramatic oversimplification and flawed logic. I hate GWB a much as the next person, but I still think UO has done more for gays in raising mainstream awareness than most…

I love how all of the logical, controdictory posts go ignored without acknowledgment or rebuttal but the ignorant, forum troll comments bashing the article get noticed.

Let’s be realistic here. Every person you could ever buy a product from will have some view that you disagree with. so when you buy that sweet antique dresser from the yard sale down the street, and the old lady selling it goes to her old southern baptist, antigay activist, pro-life church and tithes her 10%- does that mean you must now start boycotting yard sales and thrift stores, and locally own restaurants? Based on the “logic” presented in this article, it does.

Sounds pretty foolish to me when you put it in that context.

The point is, people will always have different beliefs. They will believe them whether they’re rich or poor. That’s what makes america, america. If we didn’t support someone cause they had a different view, well I don’t think wed have any friends left. So stop being hypocrites… don’t hate one man for being republican (him being antigay is not factually supported) and not your best friend for having an abortion or smoking weed or for voting to lower teachers salaries…

  17. Michael says:

This article is ridiculous. There is a lot of information that is left out and everything is based on assumption.

Senator Rick Santorum is indeed a Republican and does not support gay marriage.
Does this man not have the right to say whatever he wants and have his own opinions? He most certainly does. Check the first amendment.
It makes me laugh that everyone only focuses on one topic and belief of this man. Do you like animals? I’m sure you do just as I do. Did you know about Rick Santorums legislation for animal rights? Really? You didn’t? SHOCKER! Or how about the Workplace Religious Freedom Act which makes employers accommodate the religious observances of their employees and have flexible shifts for them.
Do I 100% agree with this man? No, but do some research on someone before you start hating on someone for ONE of their political stand points.

It also makes me laugh that “reliable ally of GWB” is in bold. absolutely ridiculous. this cries out to all of the hardcore Bush haters out there to go along with this article. It’s the fucking United States Government, everything is about politics. EVERYTHING. but in the end? Congress works together with the president to form legislation and keep the country running. EVERYONE in congress is an ally to the president, whether they wanted him to be president or not.

This article is all about boycotting Urban Outfitters and other stores because Richard Hayne donated $13,000 over the years to the Rick Santorum’s political campaign and political action committee… which clearly means Richard Hayne is anti-gay marriage right?! WRONG. No one knows why this man gave that money to this campaign or committee except for him. Another assumption: “Perhaps this explains the mysterious disappearance of pro-same-sex-marriage t-shirts off the Los Angeles Urban Outfitters shelves? Hmmm…” This could very possibly have absolutely nothing to do with any of this.

The logic in this article is simply stupid. Why should I stop shopping somewhere because I don’t agree with the owners beliefs (if these even are his beliefs). Everyone has the right to their own opinions and to say whatever the hell they want. If this is the logic that American’s lived by, no one would ever stay in business. No one would buy anything from anyone because there is always going to be something you have different views on.

I am going to continue to shop at Urban Outfitters just as I always have, because I LIKE THE CLOTHES. This is a clothing store, not political propaganda. If you want gay marriage so badly that you don’t want any of your money going to the owner of this store, than good for you. But do not try and make people do this same with assumptions and a couple of quotes.

    Good day.

  31. I am writing as an Urban Outfitters employee. I am shocked at the accusations. Maybe even contemplating quitting. But I know better. Does every person that reads this honestly believe UO is the devil? I have referenced it as ‘hell’ a time or two, but its intentions are pure(I’m sure). The $13,000 was raised from refusing a bag when you purchase an item. The proceeds were aimed at going to an organization promoting a ‘green’ and earth happy moto. I do see, in this case, the candidate is not 100% perfect. So throw that stone. I doubt every individual reading this is perfect. His morals are a bit off balanced, but this isn’t about an anti-gay agenda. It’s much bigger. We’re trying to better our living stances and create a cleaner planet Earth.

In a similar instance, we now sell TOMS! With Every Pair You Purchase, TOMS Will Give a Pair to a Child in Need.
    http://www.toms.com

I nor anyone I know or work with in this establishment hates gays.

  32. Stacy says:

Still like Anthro, UO, etc? BUY USED! Many sellers on eBay and online consignment shops have just what you are looking for (and much cheaper) and not a dime is going to Rick Santorum. Plus, you are helping the environment.

  33. cf says:

Ha! To think that he was donated money on this ONE issue is ridiculous. I seriously doubt this is his only stance. There are a myriad of political issues he’s dealing with everyday and perhaps it’s his stance on big business that has Urban Outfitters supporting him.

  34. Kat says:

THIS. “@desdemona: soooooo i might have to stop shopping at @UrbanOutfitters, and here's why: http://t.co/QuslHJj”

  35. Me Me says:

Wow you are full of it. OH NO! AN OLD GUY IS FOOLING YOUNG COOL HIP 20-SOMETHINGS INTO SHOPPING AT HIS STORE! IF ONLY THEY KNEW HE WASN’T COOL LIKE THEM!
    What a load.
And supporting someone isn’t supporting their EVERY opinion. Especially when it comes to politicians. Target’s support of this politician has nothing to do with his opinions on gay rights. It’s all about his financial policies. That doesn’t in any logical or rational way equate to “Target supporting anti-gay legislation”.
    You’re a hipster doofus.
