This is a guest post by my close friend and fellow blogger, Kristy.  Kristy’s an adventurous Seattle and aspiring locavore who will a semi-regular contributor here at Awakened Aesthetic.  If you’re a Seattle resident, like the two of us, you should check out her blog, Eats & Interests for tips on where to eat and play in the city.  If you’re looking for tips, resources and videos on eating locally and becoming part of a more sustainable community, head over to her tumblr/vlog Lola Local.

I grew up in the suburbs (many of them). Ever near a large, metropolitan city, I spent my adolescent and teenage years planning for the day I would move out into an urban area. I now live in Seattle, which I absolutely adore. But a funny thing has happened as I’ve grown up, particularly in the last year as I’ve routinely visited my Boyfriend’s parents’ home in rural Skagit County — I’ve found myself craving the opposite environment. I want to dig my hands into the ground, plant vegetables, sit back on a porch and pop fresh berries into my mouth.

Maybe all this has something to do with my efforts to become a locavore, or maybe it’s just a new maturity. In any case, springtime has come ’round and I’ve been cruising Etsy for handmade goods having to do with gardening and nature. Here are some of my faves.

First, you’re going to need something to plant in. 8Point8 has some awesome options in diverse shapes, sizes and types. Best of all, they’re all made from reclaimed wood.

Or maybe you don’t have a lot of porch/windowsill space. In that case, try out hanging pots, with CraftyApple‘s hand-forged metal hangers for flower pots. They come in 3 sizes, and are made to attach to each other!

Now you need some things to plant, right? How about seeds from TheBearFootShaman? This seller specializes in Aromatherapy and Herbal Medicine and offers heirloom, medicinal, vegetable, and flower seeds.

And of course, you don’t want to forget which seeds you planted where. Keep ‘em straight as seeds, buds and plants by marking them with these absolutely adorable plant markers! I couldn’t be more in love with monkeysalwayslook‘s shop — hand-stamped on vintage silverware! She does custom words too!

Have you tried your hand at gardening? What kinds of things to you plant?
