we have only everyone else to blame

via A Softer World.

I cringe a little each time I hear a local fashion boutique is closing.  People lose their jobs, local designers lose their outlets, and the city loses a sense of self that Nordstrom can’t match…and I lose a chance to shop somewhere local, if I could ever get off the computer.

Blogging about fashion for more than a year has made me so much more wary of paying full price that it’s eaten into my locavorian, sustainable sensibilities.  Instead of picking up a book by a local author at that kitschy bookstore, I’ll hit Amazon.com to check its sale price.  Instead of buying a gorgeous dress by Lekkerlife at one of the many Seattle boutiques they’re housed in, I’ll wait to see if something similar comes up online.  (Important note: nothing ever does.  Lekkerlife is crazy unique, well-made and amazing, so I always end up buying directly.)

I don’t play the blame game like A Softer World suggests – I’m not about to get incensed that a store not making money closes – but I do feel a little sad each time it happens, and I know I’m not part of the solution.  So I think I’ll use this comic as an excuse to get out shopping a little more often.  (Pocketbook: watch out.)

Do you do most of your shopping online, in major department stores (that’s okay too!) or local boutiques?  Where would you shop if you had the extra money or time?

If I had unlimited funds, I would spend them at the foray of well-made, unique, independently owned boutiques cluttering up the city (And I would also probably spend a small fortune at Rodarte and Marc Jacobs :X). My first purchase would be this galaxy skirt I am oogling from Mociun (http://shop.prettypleasedear.com/product/mociun-moon-walker-skirt). Sadly, 98$ on a handmade, beautiful skirt, even on sale, is way too expensive.

My real wardrobe comes from a mix of the Salvation Army, Target, and H&M.

I don’t shop at boutiques because of their prices. I hunt for the best price-quality relation and usually end up at outlets and discount stores like TJMaxx and Marshalls. I have been to boutiques and everything’s great but the prices make me cringe. Vintage stores are an exception but then again I’m suspicious about how they clean their clothes

I find shopping in actual stores for clothing intimidating. Partially because of my size and partially because I don’t ever know what I want. Both of those reasons tend to be why I shop at chain store, too, but mostly online. And with free shipping, it makes it too easy. Also, I have about zero fashion sense. I’m one of those special girls that doesn’t really know how to be a girl. I need a surragate mommy to teach me!

I do most of it online, and if I had the time I’d do more of it online, along with shopping in Paris and Melbourne.

  8. It is sad when a local store closes….as a designer it is very important to sell in stores where you personally know the owners and employees not only do you have more opportunity to find unique clothing but you establish a working relationship with these people. I would love to see Nordstrom’s buyers get to know a designer…it just does not happen small boutiques cater to designers and we cater to them and they cater to their customers. It is sad to see them close.
